Selene Garcia is an 8th grade student enrolled at Frank L Madla Accelerated Collegiate Academy. Selene began her academic career at FLMACA in the 6th grade when she immigrated from Mexico.
When she originally started at our campus the initial hurdle she had to face was the language barrier. She is a native Spanish speaker and did not speak any English upon enrolling at our campus. Through the continuous support of her teachers – Ms. Guardado and Ms. Caban – she made significant gains in her language acquisition and could speak, read and write in English by the end of her 6th grade school year.
She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society, the Student Council, and completed a summer internship with SW Workers Union’s Youth Leadership Organization. Selene has shown amazing academic gains, and will be moving on to Frank L Madla Early College High school in August 2018. She hopes to attend Harvard University and become a lawyer working on pro-bono immigration cases.
